You may have seen this once or twice where mom or grandma is cooking diri blan and suddenly takes the rice water that she had set aside and gulps it. If you’ve never seen that before, it’s definitely one that might have you wondering “what are you doing?”. As it turns out there are several benefits to rice water.
Natural Remedy. In Haiti, rice water or dlo diri is known as a natural remedy used to calm an upset stomach. It provides a soothing relief and is rich in vitamins and minerals. It can also be effective in keeping you hydrated if you’re experiencing episodes of nausea, vomit, or diarrhea. It serves as an electrolyte replacement.
Hair Growth. Another reason rice water is beneficial is in the growth of hair. This is home to China where many natives rinse their hair with rice water. It is said to be effective in strengthening and growing hair as well as making it smooth and shiny. There are many videos on YouTube reviewing this trend. The verdict is out as to whether or not this actually works.
Clearer Skin. Rice water is rich in vitamins B, C, and E and helps to promote clearer and healthier skin. It’s a natural skin toner that keeps pores tightened and prevents acne – leaving your skin looking radiant and fresh.
So the next time you’re cooking some diri blan, think about setting aside some rice water to use. It may just be worth your while.
